Pedometrics is considered one of the most developed disciplines in recent years in soil science, due to the advances in computer systems and data availability. The development of technologies related to the computation systems and algorithms allows to reach a better understanding of the soil as a phenomenon that varies in different scales in space and time. It is important for the agronomic system and the ecological and hydrological systems in which the soil is enclosed. Research in pedometrics becomes relevant to society mainly when the users (farmers and land managers) have more accessible and attractive information about soils. In addition, pedometrics should also be useful for sectors such as industry, medicine, urban planning, environment and ecology, animal health, biodiversity, mining and waste management.

Pedometrics increase the understanding of soil mapping with better quality and consistency over traditional methods. The biggest benefit of this technic is update information about soil-landscape relations.

Worldwide, information about these technics are promoted and shared through publications, conferences, and workshops organized by the Pedometrics Working Group of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS). In 2011, the SBCS (Brazilian Soil Science Society) created the same scientific structure of the IUSS with a Pedometrics Commission within the Division “Soil in Space and Time”. A Scientific Meeting on pedometrics society in Brazil, in addition to promoting national scientific research, also contribute to the popularization of this science in the country.

The II Pedometrics Brazil happens at a representative moment for our country, with the beginning of the National Soil Program (PronaSolos). The main objective of the Pronasolos is survey Brazilian soils at scales appropriated to monitored land use management. For this big challenge, modern tools are needed, such as: proximal remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), databases, artificial intelligence, among others. These techniques can provide an increase in the quality and consistency of information, as well as decrease the time and resources used to compile it.

The II Pedometrics Brazil is promoted by the Brazilian Society of Soil Science, Embrapa Soils and UFRRJ and will be online from November 24 to 27, 2021. The main theme will be “Pedometrics: Innovations in the Tropic” and will feature with four thematic:

(1) – Pedometrics: Innovations in Tropics

(2) – Legacy data: How turn it useful?

(3) – Advances in Soil Sensing

(4) – Pedometrics guidelines to systematic soil survey

We estimated enrollment of 300 participants. The conference will provide two mini-courses, which will be offered on the last two days of the event, limited to 50 people each mini-course. The schedule will soon be released.

The purpose of the II Pedometrics Brazil is discussion about news methodologies and processes to be applied in the PronaSolos, as well as to promote the exchange of experiences between Brazilian and foreign researchers and graduate students in Agronomy (Soil Science) and related areas.

We intent to publish a book (by Springer Publishing House) with contributions from selected presentations of this meeting. The II Pedometrics Brazil will also be supported by institutions and research partners such as FAPERJ, SBCS, UFV, UFSM, UNESP, UFSC, UFMT, UFPI and others Embrapa research centers.
